Born in Mobile, Alabama, to George Williams Sr. and Annie Lewis Williams, Herbert graduated from Williamson High School in 1962. He attended Bishop State Community College for two years, working as a barber to help fund his education. His military journey began when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he served his country honorably.
On November 22, 1965, Herbert married Carolyn Jackson in Mobile, Alabama. A year later, they welcomed their daughter. While proud to serve his country, he eagerly awaited returning home to spend time with his wife and child. After his military service, the family relocated to Houston, Texas, where Herbert pursued his education at Texas Southern University, majoring in Biology. Nine years later, their son was born. Herbert dedicated over 40 years of his career to the DeBakey Veterans Administration Hospital as a Biomedical Engineer.
Herbert lived life to the fullest—he was the favorite uncle, the kindest friend, and someone everyone loved to be around. He was particularly known for giving haircuts to his son, grandsons, and nephews—a skill he retained from his college days. An accomplished athlete, he excelled in basketball during high school and college and maintained a lifelong passion for both basketball and boxing.
His love for the outdoors manifested in his enthusiasm for fishing and swimming. He found simple pleasures in reading the newspaper and watching westerns. Herbert was especially proud of his kite-making skills, a tradition he lovingly passed down to his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews—teaching them not only how to craft kites but also how to fly them.
Herbert was preceded in death by his father, George Williams Sr.; his mother, Annie Williams; and his siblings, Johnnie Mae Dennis, Richmond Williams, Georgia Mae Bullock, Marshall Williams, and Perry Williams. He leaves behind his loving wife, Carolyn Williams; children, Pamela Greenwood (Eric) and Herb Williams (Andrea); grandchildren, Dru Greenwood (Corey Russell), Kyle Greenwood, Kennedy Williams, Kendall Williams, and Kylie Williams; and siblings, Alberta (Peck) Day (Al Fready), George Williams Jr., Annie Bryant (James), and Lucille Williams.
A funeral service for Herbert will be held Monday, June 16, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Earthman Funeral Directors, 4525 Bissonnet St, Bellaire, TX 77401, with a visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
