

James grew up in Victoria, Texas and graduated from Victoria High School. He received a college academic scholarship and a merit grant. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a degree in accounting wherein he participated in the honors program, was named to the Dean’s List and became a licensed CPA. He also participated in the Army ROTC program and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. James was designated a distinguished military graduate and discharged honorably as a First Lieutenant after eight years in the Army Reserve.
James worked in public accounting, manufacturing and the energy service industries for over three decades. He held senior financial positions including Risk Manager, Assistant Controller, Corporate Secretary and Treasurer at several NYSE energy service firms.
He met his future wife, Julia Mary Quick of Beaumont, Texas, while both were students at the University of Texas at Austin. They were married in 1973 and he resided in Houston for the rest of his life. He is also survived by his son Kevin Ryan Mitchell and wife Lauren; granddaughter, Elizabeth Mitchell; mother, Martha Mitchell; sister, Karen McDonald and husband Forrest, Kasie Bartek, Chris McDonald; niece, Jennifer Gaspard, nephew Patrick Mitchell, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father James E. Mitchell, Sr. and brother Robert J. Mitchell.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with a Rosary recited at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 20th at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway. The Rite of Committal will be at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, 8900 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, TX or charity of your choice
