Jo Evelyn Sexton Young

Jo was born on August 30th, 1929 in Merryville, Louisiana to Eva and Lester Sexton. She was the youngest of four children. Jo married Calvin Young on Valentine’s Day in 1950 and together they had three children; Jonathon, Gaye, and Jennifer. Jo and Calvin moved their family from Louisiana to Houston, Texas in August of 1968, finding a home at South Main Baptist Church where Jo would eventually work as a church secretary.

Jo was the ultimate caretaker, not only at home, but with her church community as well. She volunteered for years with South Main to run creative programs, tended to the church’s apartments for people who came to Houston for medical treatment, and many other outreach programs. Jo loved her grandchildren, of which she has many. She cared for them after school, always finding ways to connect with them through activities and baking. Jo wore many hats when it came to caring for her home and family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, interior design, and anything that made her home feel more like home. Feeding people was her love language, and she would eventually start catering events and weddings.

She was an avid reader and loved to do crossword puzzles. She kept her mind active until the very end. Jo was kind, warm, generous, and oh-so funny. Her grandchildren loved to laugh with her, and she almost always had a smile on her face. She had a unique ability to always know what she wanted, whether it was a project or a meal, she was able to create a vision and never waiver from it. Jo was the Matriarch of her family, and always brought everyone together in one place. She will be greatly missed and will continue to be loved immensely by her family.

Jo is preceded in death by her husband Calvin, mother and father Eva and Lester, brother Fred, and sisters Bernice and Kathleen. Jo is survived by her three children, Jonathan, Gaye, and Jennifer, her seven grandchildren, Jason Hamor and wife Melissa Hamor, Katy Cartland and husband Connor Cartland, Laura Young and wife Krystal Salinas, Austin Young and wife Kristin Young, Joseph Young and wife Rachael Young, Nathan Young and wife Jazmine Young, and Christopher Young.

A graveside service for Jo will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
