Mel Bishop was born on July 8, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to Samuel and Helen Bishop. Mel grew up in Detroit and was a graduate of Mumford High School where he was a four-year Varsity track star and was all-city in track his senior year. After high school, he went to Wayne State University where he studied to become a teacher. He was proud of his achievements at the school where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity and was elected Homecoming King his senior year. After college he married Marilyn Marsh and they moved out to suburbs of Detroit, most notably Oak Park and West Bloomfield and started to raise their three sons, David, Scott, and Eric.
When his children were young, he went to The University of Michigan on the weekends and received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and started a career in hospital administration which lasted until his retirement. His career brought him to Beaumont, Texas in 1982, and finally to Houston, Texas in 1985. During his time in hospital administration, his two proudest accomplishments was bringing the first mobile C.A.T. Scan unit to any private hospital in Houston as well as developing the first physical therapy and sports medicine facility to a private hospital in the state of Texas. Outside of work, Mel enjoyed lifting weights, watching The Houston Astros and The Houston Rockets, watching science fiction movies, and loved when he was able to travel. His favorite vacations were cruises and going to Las Vegas.
Mel is predeceased by his wife Marilyn Bishop, his parents Helen and Samuel Bishop, and his in-laws Ruth and Sol Meyers. He is survived by his children, David Bishop, Scott and Geri Bishop, and Eric and Rachel Bishop; his sister, Madelyn Liss; his grandchildren, Ryan Bishop, Nathan Bishop, Dylan Bishop, and Marissa Bishop; his sisters-in-law, Barbara (Michael) Simon, and Joni (Mel) Muskovitz; and his seven nieces and their families.
