Leon Ullrich, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and professional, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of dedication, integrity, and love. He was born on May 13, 1931, in Rosenberg, Texas, to Raymond L. Ullrich Sr. and Nell Hardy Ullrich. His early years were marked by both loss and love, as his mother, Nell, passed away in 1937.
In 1939, his father remarried Will Ellen Boyett, who became a loving and devoted mother to Leon for the next 37 years. Leon spent his childhood and formative years in Rosenberg, where he attended school through high school. A bright and ambitious student, he pursued higher education at the University of Houston, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His academic achievements set the stage for a long and distinguished career in the energy industry.
In 1953, Leon married the love of his life, Dorothy Foster. Their marriage was a testament to partnership, love, and devotion. Together, they built a wonderful life centered on faith, family, and strong values. That same year, Leon embarked on a career with Houston Natural Gas Corporation, a company that later became Enron Corp. Over the course of 40 years, he held various roles, with a primary focus on information systems. His expertise and leadership led him to serve as General Manage of External Affairs, Public & Investor Relations before his retirement in 1993.
Beyond his professional life, Leon was a man of great wisdom, generosity, and kindness. He believed in giving back and sharing his knowledge with others. After retiring from Enron, he spent three years working at the University of Houston, where he contributed to the academic community and inspired future generations.
Leon’s greatest source of joy was his family. He and Dorothy were blessed with three wonderful children: Lee Ullrich (Dawn), Cathy Doyle (Tim), and Laurie Lavoie (Steve) along with his foreign student daughter from Denmark Vibeke Madsen (Poul). As a father, he was supportive, loving, and an unwavering source of strength. His love extended to his eight cherished grandchildren—Megan Lavoie Lee (Ashley), Ross Ullrich (Annette), Chelsea Lavoie, Tyler Doyle, Paige Lavoie Von Tungeln, Grethe Ullrich-Mead (Ryan), Corey Doyle (Lorena), and Caroline Ullrich Brennan (Preston) and seven great-grand children each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
Leon will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the love he shared. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories and values he instilled in them.
A service to honor and celebrate Leon’s life will be held at Bellaire United Methodist Church on Friday February 28, 2024 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Bellaire United Methodist Church or Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) in his memory as he was a Type 1 diabetic for 78 years.
Leon Ullrich’s journey on this earth was one of love, dedication, and impact. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
