Samuel Platt, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully at his home on May 18, 2018, at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Sam was born in Montreal, Canada and immigrated to Pittsburgh at an early age. A Korean War vet, he was proud to serve his country. Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Nancy Platt (nee Hartmann). Samuel graduated from Duquesne University. He loved sports including golf, baseball, squash, tennis, and pickle ball. After retiring in 1999, he and Nancy found another love in traveling. They traveled the world and were at home on land, in the sky, or on the sea.
He was known for his incredibly sweet and compassionate personality. He was one of the biggest fans of the TV show M*A*S*H, and each episode left him laughing and crying, sometimes simultaneously.
Sam is survived by his loving wife and children Neil Platt and Laura Platt Train (Richard) and six grandchildren Sarah Platt, Aaron Platt, Victoria Miller, Zachary Miller, Jeremy Train, and Allison Train. Sam was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Lynn Miller, his parents Israel and Sonia Platt, and his brother Joel Platt.
A graveside funeral will be held at Forest Park East Cemetery on May 22, 2018 at 10:00 am. Shiva services will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 pm at the Platt residence.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research or to the charity of your choice.
