

Sister Rose Marie McDermott, CCVI, died at St. Anne’s Convent on January 4, 2026. Sister was born in Enniskean, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, the daughter of James and Mary McDermott. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX, on March 29, 1951, at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. She made her Perpetual Profession of Vows on August 15, 1959, at Villa de Matel, Houston.
To prepare for ministry, Sr. Rose Marie earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Riverside University, Riverside, CA, and a degree in Management from California Coast University, Santa Ana, CA. Sr. Rose Marie was also a Certified Catholic Chaplain and ministered in the Pastoral Care Department in many of our hospitals. At Schumpert Medical Center, Sr. Rose also served as administrative director of material management/environment, and senior vice president of mission effectiveness/community outreach. She also volunteered at the Cara Center, a hospital outreach program for abused children and at the Gingerbread House which had a similar mission. While working in Shreveport, LA, Sister was honored as one of the “Women of the Century” by the Women’s Business Council of Shreveport. She was considered an advocate of the underserved for her mission work. After a life of ministry, Sister dedicated her time to prayer at Villa de Matel.
Sister was predeceased by her parents James and Mary, brothers Sean and Frank, sister, Sr. Enda Marie, CCVI, sister-in-law Betty, nephew Jim, and niece Anne-Marie. Sister Rose Marie is survived by her sister-in-law Nan McDermott, nieces and nephews: Marie, Frankie, Anne, Brenda, John and Catherine, grand nieces, grand nephews, great-grand nieces, great-grand nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Sister Rose Marie’s body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa De Matel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas on Sunday, January 11th at: 5:00 PM. The Mass of Resurrection will also be held at Villa De Matel Chapel on Monday, January 12th at 10:30 AM. The Rite of Committal will follow at Villa De Matel Cemetery.
