

Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Hilda Baltz, nee Sensel. Her husband Marshall Peterson Jr. whom she married February 4, 1956, in Pocahontas Arkansas, a grandson Brandon Peterson, a sister Beverly Baltz Speedie, brother in-law Thomas Speedie, a sister in-law Norma Peterson, brother in-law and sister in-law Al and Jean Owen, nephews Bruce Owen, Mark Peterson and niece Christina Wooten.
Surviving are her three sons: Marshall (Lebecca) Peterson III of Troy IL, Blake (Diana) Peterson of Belleville IL and Lance Peterson of Belleville IL, a bother in-law James M. Peterson of Fairview Heights IL, five grandchildren, Rachel (Dean) Lugge of New Baden IL, Tara (James) Sayres of Trenton IL, Ashley Peterson of Belleville IL, Lauren (Joel) Bishop of St. Louis MO, Ryan (Jamie Havel) Peterson of Belleville, four great-grandchildren, Reagan Lugge of New Baden IL, Lucas Sayres of Trenton IL and Wyatt and Wesley Bishop of St. Louis MO, six nieces; Connie (Ryan) Denny, Karen Nevarez, Barbie (Steve) Struck, Becky (Andy) Haines, Sherri Wooten, Kimberly (Kevin) Buskirk, Gail Owen; nephew Thomas C. Speedie; and a dear friend, Jonathan Hyland.
Bernell had the happiest childhood, with the best parents, growing up in Millstadt IL. Her parents, Hilda and Albert were married 63 years, and were an inspiration to their children and to all who knew them.
Bernell and husband Marshall celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with the family at Pere Marquette Lodge, February 4, 2016. They were married for 63 years.
Mrs. Peterson was a manager at Shoe Stop, Fairview Heights IL and retired from Dollar General, Belleville. She will be remembered for the love of her family and the many special times shared together; she enjoyed many dear friendships over the years.
She enjoyed genealogy and created many scrapbooks of family lineage. She enjoyed canning the fresh produce she and Marshall grew on their farm. She loved to go to flea markets and yard sales, looking for collectibles, and refurbishing antique furniture. She loved to dance. In the later years she enjoyed playing the slots at the casinos with her husband and good friends. She was a loyal fan of Cardinal baseball.
Visitation: Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Illinois.
Funeral: Services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024, at the funeral home. There is an additional visitation one hour prior to funeral service.
Interment will follow in Valhalla Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Belleville, Illinois.
