James "Jim" Hansen, age 80, of Waterloo, IL, passed away peacefully on February 10th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 16, 1944, Jim lived a life full of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.
Jim was a proud veteran, having honorably served in the U.S. Air Force. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
He was a beloved husband, dad, and Poppaw, whose greatest joy in life was his family. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Geree Hansen, originally from East St. Louis, IL, who passed away in 2023. Though heartbroken by her loss, Jim found strength in the love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brother Ron Hansen.
He is survived by his loving children: Shannon (Brian) Bosworth, Jimmy Keller, and Buddy (Kelley) Keller. His greatest pride and joy was being Poppaw to his cherished grandchildren: Rick (Becca) Hansen, Sarah (Doug) Putkowski, Rachael (Nick) Fannon, Jessica Keller, Clayton Keller, Emily Shank, and Jake Keller. He was also incredibly proud of his great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Connor, Frankie, Lucas, Quinn, Wesley, and Cecilia, who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind his brother, William (Betty) Hansen of Chicago, IL.
Jim worked for Nabisco for many years and was affectionately known as the “Cookie Man.” After his time there, he continued making connections in the community while working at Schnucks, where he became beloved by many, especially during the holiday season when he spread joy as Santa Claus.
A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Jim rarely missed a game and loved talking baseball. In fact, Jim loved talking—to everyone. He never knew a stranger, always finding a way to connect with those around him. His warm heart, quick wit, and ability to brighten any room made him truly one of a kind.
A service to honor and celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 12:00 P.M. at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, IL. A visitation will be held two hours prior to the service, from 10:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Belleville Humane Society.
In tribute to Jim’s love for the St. Louis Cardinals, the family encourages visitors to wear their favorite Cardinals gear in his honor.
Jim’s love, service, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Though deeply missed, he will never be forgotten.
