James grew up within the Dailey Bros Circus in Texas; he performed with horses and had a pet elephant named Jenny. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1962 before becoming a truck driver. He loved riding his yellow Can AM, but above all else, he treasured spending time with his wife and children.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Yvonne Alice (nee Huard) Hess; his beloved wife of 59 years, Janice Jean (nee Ramsey) Johnston; brother-in-law, James “Jimmy” Ramsey and sister-in-law, Marianne Nold.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his sons, Ralph Johnston and Duane Johnston; daughters, Mary "Cyndy" (Greg) Wise and Peggy (Kris) Koenig; grandchildren, Daniel (Brooke) Wise, Daisy Wise, Russell Wise, Kole Koenig and Lori Koenig; great-grandchild, Annabelle Wise; brothers-in-law, Mike (Pat) Ramsey and Ed Nold; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Mann, Juanita Ramsey and Roberta “Birdie” (Rick) Brown; plus numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff of Kindred Hospital for the excellent care and attention they provided James in his final days.
Per James’ wishes, he will be laid to rest with his wife Janice at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 10:30 AM. A formal procession to Jefferson Barracks will commence at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home.
