She was born to Lyle Edward Erben and Ethel Ingrid Halstrom on February 2, 1942, at Columbus Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Carolyn attended Beverly Park Elementary School, where she showcased her talent as a gifted artist by designing the school emblem. She graduated from Evergreen High School in 1960, aspiring to become an interior decorator, and was an active member of the choir and the Latin club.
