Born in Newport, Pend Oreille, Washington on April 15, 1924, he was the son of Arthur and Florence (Brown) Linder.
His early years were in Newport, then Buckley, Washington, where he received his early schooling, followed by St. Martin's College, which was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Marines (1942-1946) during World War II. He was honored with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service in Iwo Jima (19 Feb 45 to 7 March 45) as an Expert Rifleman, Scout Sniper and Intelligence Man.
Art married his high school sweetheart, Ellen Caviezel, on January 26, 1946 in Seattle, Washington, where they made their first home, and then in Kirkland and Bellevue. Art designed and built the house where they currently lived, and, as a hobby, built a 26' fishing boat on his property.
He loved to keep his yard beautiful and he is remembered by his children as always having time for them, especially time to talk or play catch after a long day of work, and for his friendliness in greeting others while on the job or around his neighborhood.
He loved to hike in the Cascades and travel throughout the Northwest and his latest area of interest was the Eastern Washington scablands caused by the Ice Age floods.
Art graduated from the University of Washington and worked for Boeing, in Seattle, as a plant manager and then was sent to China to work on a project for that company in the early eighties. While a manager at Boeing, Art always made a point of stopping to chat with each of his employees at least once a week. Whether at work or working in the yard, walking the dog or out on a hike, he always liked to stop and say hello.
Art was predeceased by son Timothy in 1960. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, his four children and their spouses, John (Margo) of Nanaimo, BC, Jerry (Karen) of Tigard, Oregon, Karen (Sam) Greenwood of Renton, Washingon, and Kevin of Seattle.
He is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Gabriel, Deborah, Michael, Mary, Bridget, Dominic, Thomas, Peter, Kathleen, Patrick, Ryan, and David, as well as twelve great-grandchildren: Isabel, James, Hannah, Amelia, Timothy, Marianne, John, Monica, Luke Charles, Francis, Joseph, and Lawrence.
A private burial service will be on Thursday, January 27th. The Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, January 28, at 11am at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 4301 88th Ave. SE, Mercer Island, Washington. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will precede the funeral at 10:30am. A reception will be held at the church following Mass.
Arrangements under the direction of Sunset Hills Funeral Home, Bellevue, WA.
