Born in Shanghai in 1938, Fernando Hui was the son of General Hui Chun-chi, Commander-in-Chief of the Yue Army under the National Revolutionary Government led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. His early years were shaped by the turbulence of war, prompting his family’s relocation to Hong Kong during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Fernando’s academic brilliance emerged early. In 1957, he graduated top of his class in the humanities from Ling Ying Secondary School in Hong Kong and was recommended for university admission in Taiwan. He earned his law degree from National Taiwan University in 1961, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in life insurance and business leadership.
In 1962, Fernando returned to Hong Kong and joined American International Assurance (AIA). His dedication and expertise led him to earn the prestigious FLMI designation in 1974. Over the next decades, he held senior executive roles at China Life Underwriters, Hang Lung Insurance, and Hong Kong Family Insurance. From 1979 to 2010, he served as President of the Asia-Pacific Hong Kong office of the U.S.-based Robert E Lee of Hong Kong , marking over 40 years of excellence in the life insurance industry. He was a permanent member of the Hong Kong Life Insurance Practitioners Association and served ten consecutive terms on Appeals Committee of the Hong Kong Confederation of Insurance Brokers.
Fernando married Nancy in 1971, and together they built a joyful and loving family. They were blessed with a daughter, Katty, and a son, Willy. In 2001, Katty married Cliff Lee, and the family grew to include two cherished grandchildren: Joanne (born 2003) and Jason (born 2005).
Beyond his professional achievements, Fernando was deeply committed to public service. He joined the International Lions Club in 1978 and served as President of the Hong Kong Island 303 district Lions Club in 1987-1988. He later became a permanent member of the organization. In 1988, he joined the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Brigade, offering voluntary emergency services to the community. His leadership roles included Division President, Company President, and Vice President of the Hong Kong Island Region. He was honored with the St. John Long Service Medal and the title of Serving Brother of the Order of St. John.
Fernando’s passions reflected his vibrant and balanced spirit. A devoted golfer for over 50 years, he served as Honorary President of the Tiger Force Golf Team. He also embraced the quiet discipline of Go (Weiqi), serving as President of the Hong Kong Go Society and tirelessly promoting the game throughout the city.
Fernando Hui’s life was a testament to integrity, service, and love- for his family, his profession, and his community. His legacy continues to inspire all who knew him.
