I have been thinking of Gayle so much lately and really missing her. I worked with her at Island Park when I was the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services counselor there and she would often stop by my office during one of her laps around the school to check in around certain students or to let me know when she thought someone might need a little help.  She was tender hearted, loving and intuitive. She often shared book choices and helped me figure out how to grow bigger eyelashes! She was so proud of her family and would share pictures and stories, she will be so missed. 

I had the honor of working with Gayle the last 4 years. She was incredibly sweet and always said hello with a big smile. Gayle cared deeply for her students and would always come to my office to tell me if she had concerns about one of them. I will miss seeing her in the hallway and her sincere kindness.

Gayle was an excellent educator and I was fortunate to cross paths with her many years ago at Woodridge Elementary.  She was so skilled and capable and also kind, strong and fun!  As others have mentioned she had an amazing smile – so warm, spontaneous and radiant.  My sincerest sympathies to her family.

Gayle, I just talked with you on September 4 and you told me you felt great. The happiness in your voice gave me hope that you would be back to school soon. During that phone call, you talked about your lovely daughters. You were always so proud of them and loved them more than life itself. I will miss your visits with me in the classroom and your help with my students. You always put in more time with those students that needed your help. I will also miss our staff room lunches together. You use to read a book (usually a biography)or magazine during lunch unless you were busy socializing:) It just won’t be the same without you. May your family find comfort in remembering your beautiful face and smile and the fun times you shared. I know that’s how I will remember you. I will miss you. Your friend, Shelley Wangen

I loved sitting with Gayle during “all district meetings “ at  MISD.  She was always so sweet, kind,and humorous as we shared teaching and cat stories. She so loved her family and teaching.  She is gone but her love will live on in every heart she touched, human and feline!

Gayle and I had been friends since 1st grade. We attended Woodridge Elementary, Hyak Junior High (now the International school) and Sammamish HS. together

Gayle lived  7 houses down the street,  Her brother and I played on soccer & baseball teams  together for many years.

Gayle's dad, Jerry coached my little league team and was also a positive influence in my life as were many neighborhood parents.

Gayle and I coached my sisters younger sister (Sarah) soccer team together when we were in HS.

Although I only saw Gayle a couple of times over the last 35yrs, when I did see her. it felt like our friendship had not missed a beat! Her smile was her secret weapon and it melted my heart every time I saw her.  My heart goes out to her extended family and I will keep you all in my thoughts & prayers.

Gayle and I were colleagues and dear friends. We were both Learning Support Specialists on Mercer Island. When I think of Gayle, I think of her radiant smile, her kind and loving spirit, and how beautiful she was both inside and out. She loved her students and encouraged and supported each and every one of them. Above all else, she loved her family. Whenever she spoke of her girls, her  face lit up. She adored them and was so proud of them. I will miss Gayle greatly. She will always have a special place in my heart. My condolences to the whole family. You're all in my thoughts and prayers.

When I think of Gayle, the word gentle is the first word in my head. Passing her in the halls of Island Park with a beautiful smile on her face always lifted my spirits. She will be so missed. She was so loved. 

Gayle worked with both my boys for years at Island Park. She loved them both and they her. Not only did she help them with reading, she was a kind, patient, compassionate, encouraging  and loving presence in their lives, and supportive of me. To be in her presence was to feel cared for. It was clear she enjoyed her work and my boys cherished their time with her. Her work was more than work to her; it was a heart-felt investment in the lives of young people.  This is a sad loss for us. Please know she made a difference. We will always remember her loving energy. 

Gayle was an amazing lady and she will be missed so much!  She was a great addition to our family.  She could hold her own against Dad and Nick's senses of humor.  Together Gayle and Nick created a beautiful family.  She was caring and kind.  I will remember that she was always helpful at our family get togethers.  She was a great cook too.  I was so proud of her for getting her master's degree, working during the week, and studying all weekend to achieve her goal.  So many children benefited from her with their reading skills.  She has touched countless lives and she will be remembered with love and admiration.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone and especially Nick.  We thought the world of Gayle.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, and school teacher.  We loved her very much! 

I learned so much from Gayle and am thankful for our time together.  I will remember her fondly and will smile while doing so.  Gayle was a bright light at Island Park Elementary.  She loved working with her students and she helped them become great readers.  I will miss my dear friend greatly, and I know the students at Island Park will miss her as well.  My deepest condolences to her family.

It was time for you to go, but I won't say goodbye.  I'll look for you in rainbows that are prominent in the sky.  I'll look for you in the clouds that drift across the blue sky.  I'll look for you in the stars that glisten in the night sky.  Your life was a blessing; Your memory a treasure.  You were loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.    

I worked with Gayle at Island Park Elementary. We would pass each other walking in the hall and she always greeted every child. She will be missed as a valued member of our Island Park community. 

Oh, dear sweet Gayle! I taught along side of Gayle at Woodridge Elementary and had her lovely daughter, Valerie, in my 3rd grade class. I can still clearly see Gayle’s beautiful face and hear her infectious laugh. She will forever be driving down memory lane with her beautiful red hair blowing in the wind with the windows down in her beloved turquoise Camaro. Pedal to the metal, Gayle!

Gayle was a friend of mine in high school. We called our group of friends, the “Nonconformists”.  Gayle was always her own person; a free bird who was kind to everyone and who loved to have fun. She was beautiful and artistic. She loved children and knew how to get down on their level and help them to feel heard and appreciated. I know that because after I became a mother and had my first child, he wound up up being one of her students at Woodridge Elementary. Losing her so soon was a shock. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to see her bright smile and beautiful red locks anymore, but she will always live on in a bright and happy place where my youthful memories remain. ❤️

I have worked with Gayle for the past three years at Island Park Elementary. I would see her several times a day in the hallways of IP because we both had many students we would see during a single day. What I will remember most about Gayle was her kind smile, warm words of support  especially when I was having an off day, the beautiful color of her hair and the caring way she spoke about all of her students. I will miss seeing her in the hallways of IP and being able to talk with her. Please know that you all will be in my thoughts during this time. 

Gayle was a wonderful & generous person. 

I was best friends with her daughter, Jodi, and lived two doors down -so I spent a lot of time over at their house growing up - where Gayle truly made me feel like a member of their family.  She was so loving and welcoming that I knew I was ALWAYS invited to whatever they were doing & could never overstay my welcome...

I feel grateful and blessed to have all of my fond memories of Gayle sprinkled throughout my childhood...  

My favorite special memory is that she would always give me the first rose of the season when her rose bushes bloomed, because I was “Anna Rose!” Every year...  🌹

Gayle and I worked together at Island Park for many, many years. She loved her daughters and would share photos of them and of course all the trouble the cats would get into as well. Gayle loved her job and touched the lives of so many students over the years. I am saddened that I won't be seeing her face walking into my classroom to share and just chat.

Gayle worked with both our kids at Island Park and they absolutely loved her. They would come home telling us about her love of cats and during holiday time they would search in stores for new things to add that she didn’t have. She was kind, patient and a positive influence and we are forever grateful. May her memory be for a blessing.

I greatly admired and respected Gayle’s commitment to her students and fellow teachers.  She will be greatly missed.  I have made a donation to Mercer Island Youth and family Services in her honor.

She was a kind and lovely person.

Their cat "Bonesy" would sometimes walk onto the nearby school playground. I asked Gayle how he got that unusual name.
"He doesn't have a mean bone in his body," she replied, and that was true of our friend Gayle, also.
