

Sarah Jean Sutherland, known to her friends and family as Jean, passed away November 2. She was 93. Mrs. Sutherland was born in Seneca, Kansas in 1920, the daughter of Ward and Ethyl Brown. She had two sisters, Ruth and Catherine. Mrs. Sutherland graduated from High School in Manhattan, Kansas and attended college there. She met William L. Sutherland at Kansas State University. They were married in Manhattan in September 1942. Their only son Bruce was born in 1946. The lived in Los Angeles, Boulder, Colorado and Wichita, Kansas before Mr. Sutherland was transferred from Boeing in Wichita to Seattle in 1952. They fell in love with the Northwest and never left. They bought their first home on 94th Avenue in Yarrow Point in 1952 and lived there for 57 years. Besides being a loving wife and doting mother, she was an avid gardener. She belonged to the Yarrow Point Garden Club and volunteered at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens. She enjoyed traveling, boating, hiking in the mountains and at the beach and embraced the Northwest lifestyle. She was an avid crossword puzzle fan. Mr. Sutherland died in 1988 but she stayed on at their beautifully landscaped home until 2009 when she moved to an assisted living home. Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her son Bruce and his wife Olga from Olympia and a sister Catherine Amos in Garden City, Kansas. Mrs. Sutherland will be interred at Sunset Hills Memorial Park with her husband. The memorial service will be at 11:00 am November 15th at Sunset Hills Funeral Home.
