Mei was born on March 20, 1919 in Canton, China. At the age of 18, she moved to Hong Kong and was married to Juck Yau Chiu. This union was blessed with nine children. Juck Yau preceded her in death in 1980.
In 1991, Mei immigrated to Seattle, Washington, and was later joined by her daughters and families. Over the years, she developed many lifelong friendships while attending Chinese Baptist Church and more recently, Blessed Life Church. Mei enjoyed gardening, playing mahjong, and hosting large family gatherings.
In recent years, Mei enrolled into the adult day program at Legacy House, where she met many new friends and enjoyed weekly activities. She was well loved by all as she was famously nicknamed “goo po” (grandfather’s sister in Cantonese) by the staff and fellow participants. Her positive attitude and passion for life has inspired many, including the inception of a nonprofit, “The Best Day of My Life So Far”.
In July 2018, Mei reached a major milestone of becoming a proud U.S. citizen at the age of 99.
Mei went to be with the Lord peacefully on November 13, 2018, surrounded by her family. She is survived by six children, thirteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her friends and family.
