Martha graduated from Classen High School in 1940. In August 1941, she married William C. Nikkel. Martha and Nick were married 60 years before his passing in 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Ruth and Nellie.
During World War II, Martha, our very own Rosie the Riveter, was a turret lathe operator at Douglas Aircraft Plant. She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed camping, fishing and family vacations. Whether she was working in sales or “shopping” for a sale, she was a natural. She retired at the age of 69 as Suspension Center Supervisor at Putnam City High School. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards and dominoes, reading and going on road trips.
Martha is survived by daughters: Carolyn Yon Warner and D’Ann Becker Haynes; grandchildren: Heather Yon, Maegan Becker Wienecke (Danny) and Luke Becker (Ashley); and great-grandsons: Coleman Becker, Landon Becker, Riley Wienecke and Cole Webb. Nannie’s beautiful blue eyes would light up when she saw her great-grandsons. She leaves a legacy of love and generosity.
Special gratitude is extended to Southern Plaza Assisted Living and residents, Christine Hauck APRN, Sooner Home Health and Good Shepherd Hospice. Rather than flowers, please visit frequently an elderly or suffering family member or friend and run their errands, help with their chores, provide a meal and dine with them. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.billmerrittfuneralservice.com for the Nikkel family.
