The early morning hours were Mildred Steele’s favorite time of day. It seems appropriate that she went home to be with her Savior the morning of September 8, 2011. Mildred, born May 18, 1917, was the fourth of five children of Hazel and David R. Olson. Her husband Roy F. Steele, her parents, and brothers Harry Olson, Harold Olson, Merle Olson, and sister Fern Olson Taylor predeceased her. Mildred grew up on a farm and she loved farm life. Mildred graduated from Putnam City High School class of 1937. She married Roy F. Steele February 8, 1941. They shared a love of farming and lived in rural areas throughout their married life. One of their greatest joys was loading up their truck and delivering produce to their friends and relatives. Mildred was an excellent cook and she enjoyed sharing her lovely pies and a pot of hot coffee with friends. She didn’t talk a lot, but her sweet smile spoke volumes. She and Roy loved to play dominoes and they were hard to beat. Mildred enjoyed her involvement in Eastern Star. Their son Donald Ray was born June 29, 1951. Don had an ideal childhood on the farm accompanying his dad to feed the cows, riding the tractor and enjoying the treats his mom made for him, especially pickles. Don completed their lives. Mildred is survived by her son Don, a host of nieces and nephews, and many other beloved family members and friends. She was lovingly cared for by her nieces Connie Theis, Kathy Tucker, and Kris Greenwood, and her dear friend Genise Scott. Services for Mildred will be held at Merritt Funeral Home in Bethany, Monday, September 12, 2011, 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Chapel Hill. Family will be greeting friends before the funeral service at 9:00 a.m. in the Bill Merritt Reception Room
