Roy Thomas and Jean Constance (Weldon) Pope welcomed their first son, Thomas Roy Pope, on August 3, 1946 in San Rafael, CA. He passed away peacefully at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center on June 11, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
A highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, Tom rarely talked about his awards or accolades. He served in the United States Air Force from 1965 – 1969 as a pararescue/recovery specialist, flew 142 combat missions and compiled more than 324 hours of combat flying. On his last mission, he was severely injured and received a medical discharge. During his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His Commander stated “Sgt. Pope was the most courageous man I ever met”.
Later in life Tom enjoyed traveling, painting and spending time with his family. He was an accomplished watercolor artist. He especially loved painting southwest desert scenes and participated in many local art festivals.
Tom would not want to just be remembered for his heroism in Vietnam, he would want to be known for his love of family. The family would like to thank the staff at the Clinton Veterans Center for their unwavering care. Honoring Tom’s wishes, there will not be a public funeral service. If you would like to honor Tom’s life, please consider making an online donation to the Pararescue ‘PJ’ Association
