October 27, 2014 Ray Hughes was born in Warrior, Alabama and lived most of his life in and around the Birmingham area. Ray served in the Army near the end of WWII, was a member of the Alabama Air National Guard and retired as a Lt. Colonel form the Air Force Reserves. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and retired from the Alabama DOT where he worked as a Research Scientist. Ray was an avid bridge player and beekeeper. He was very benevolent and will be missed by all that knew him. Mr. Hughes is survived by his son, Bert Hughes; daughter, Judy Howard; grandchildren, Collin and Davis Hughes, Madison Howard; and sister, Cherry Doyle. A private family service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Liberty Minter Cemetery, Kimberly, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations to the UAB Department of Chemistry are appreciated.
