Janet Newfield Minisman Goldfarb died on August 7, 2019 at the age of 79. She was born on November 24, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama to parents B.G. Minisman, Sr. and Emma Ullman Newfield Minisman. Her great-grandfather was Samuel Ullman, the first lay Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El, followed by his son-in-law, her grandfather, Dr. Rabbi Morris Newfield. She grew up across the street from Mountain Brook Elementry School, where she graduated, and went on to Shades Valley High School and The Charles E. Ellis School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She married the love of her life, Morton Goldfarb, in 1958 and graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 1962. She taught World History at Shades Valley High School before devoting her self to raising her three children, Jon Craig Goldfarb (Melina), of Birmingham, Alabama; Kimberly Anne Goldfarb Gordon (Jeff), of New York; and Dr. Charles Alan Goldfarb (Talia), of St. Louis, Missouri. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Morton Goldfarb, her brother B.G. Minisman, Jr. (Carol), her three children, nine grandchildren: Ellie, Gabrielle, Ilan, Daniel, Chloe, Reis, Jake, Kylie and Macy, and many nieces and nephews. Janet had various interests, including gardening, but the most consuming one was her interest in German Shepherd dogs and the welfare of animals in general. Throughout her life, she had several world and American champions, but her pride and joy came from the dogs who spent time indoors with her and her recent rescue mixed breed, Izzy. Due to her lifelong love of elephants, she was a strong supporter of The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. The Alabama Symphony was of special interest to her as well. Graveside services will be held in Birmingham, Alabama at Elmwood Cemetery on August 9, 2019, at 10:00. A Shiva luncheon for all friends and family will be held in Abroms Hall at Temple Emanuel El (2100 Highland Avenue South) immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, Temple Emanu-El, Chabad of Alabama (Birmingham), or the Birmingham Humane Society.
