She is survived by her two sons, Bobby (Jane) and Kyle (Debra), a brother, Homer Shaffer (Doris), three grandsons, Jeff (Myra), Rob (Edie) and Shaffer (Lindsey), two granddaughters, Leslie (Bradford), Magen (Daniel), 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
She was a resident of Quitman, Georgia and worked as a nurse at Brooks County Hospital in Quitman until she met and married Robert P. Hewlett in 1942. She moved to the Birmingham area where she lived until her passing.
She was affectionately called "Miss Martha", a name given her by her first grandson. This name stuck with her and so almost every family member and friend used it, even her husband! Miss Martha was a joy.
Miss Martha lived her early life during many tough times including WWII and the Great Depression. Due to work shortages her parents moved many times to find jobs primarily in the farming industry. It was hard work and Miss Martha drew from that experience the value of sacrifice. She even dropped out of school to help her mother raise the children.
She learned the value of staying home to raise her two boys while her husband worked. They were a one car family and so Miss Martha would spend her days cleaning, sewing, ironing, washing, and disciplining those boys. Cooking was her forte, but it was beyond explanation why she detested cooking, a fact that the family did not know until much later in her life.
She was loved by so many people including family, friends, doctors and their staffs, new acquaintances, her church family, in short, almost everyone! She was the perfect hostess welcoming family and friends with open arms and lots of love. She so loved her church. She made sure her two boys made it to Sunday school and church when they were growing up. She would sing hymns to her boys. Her favorite was "Jesus Loves Me" and she loved Jesus too.
Her compassion for others was exemplary. Once while she was hospitalized, she heard a patient down the hall crying in pain. She said, "Oh I wish the Lord would take her pain away and give it to me".
She was almost always joyous, smiling and happy to see you. Now she is lavishing in the loving arms of her Friend and Savior. In fact, 3 days before her death at a time when she had had no pain medicine and so should have been in severe pain, she was asked how she felt. She answered with a smile but in a labored whisper you could only hear up close, "I feel WONDERFUL!". Maybe, just maybe, the Holy Spirit had removed her pain and had begun to escort her into Paradise! Praise our Lord and Savior!
Miss Martha........oh how we loved you!
