Sherwood Bilbro “Tip” Bickerstaff, 82, passed away May 28, 2018. He was born July 3, 1935 and proceeded in death by his parents, George Hale, Sr. and Clotield Bilbro Bickerstaff of Columbus, Georgia, his brothers, George Hale Bickerstaff, Jr. and Howard Jefferson Bickerstaff both of Columbus, Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Marie Meadows Bickerstaff and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tip attended Wynnton Elementary School and graduated from Columbus High School. He went on to also graduate from Auburn University where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He remained a faithful Auburn fan throughout his life. He then attended Clemson University after graduating from Auburn to study ceramic engineering. From Clemson he started working for the family business, Bickerstaff Clay Products in Columbus, Georgia. The company built a brick plant in Birmingham, Alabama in 1964 and Tip moved to Birmingham to operate the sales division for the company. The company sold their brick products in 38 states and the family business operated for 110 years before selling in 1995 to Boral Bricks. Tip worked for 5 years with Boral Bricks before retiring in 2000.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, Monday Morning Quarterback Club, The Club, Beaux Arts Krewe and ROMEOs. He loved to hunt, fish and play golf and took several trips a year with friends. He was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham where he was a member of the board of directors and served as President in 1983, He was also a member of the Gravy Train, Two Bit, and Rollers Dog Fights. He was also a member of Shoal Creek Golf Club and over his golf career he had 15 holes-in-one.
