Shirley Adelman known to most as “Nana,” passed away peacefully at her home on December 2, 2021 at the age of 97. She was born in New York City in 1924. A child of the depression, she lived through World War II, married her beloved husband, Norman, and became a mother to two children, Rochelle (Bruce) Tucker and Harrin (Judy) Adelman. She adored her children and they loved her. She was blessed to be a grandmother to four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
There are many words to describe Shirley, but none of them would paint an image of a woman who was anything but full of life. She was often times described as a “pistol”, “fiery”, or a “spitfire”. People would often be shocked to learn Shirley was in in her 90’s because she looked and acted decades younger.
Shirley’s small apartment was filled with pictures of her family and not much else, which was exactly the way she wanted it. Shirley was generous even though she had very little. She was always trying to give something away such as clothing or food. Even at the very end of her life she continued to worry about her family’s health and well-being, which truly shows the kind of person she was. Shirley was rich by the most important measure-love.
A graveside service was held on December 3, 2021 at Elmwood Cemetery officiated by Rabbi Yossi Posner of Chabad of Alabama. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chabad of Alabama, Collat Jewish Family Services, Grace Klein Community, or Temple Emanu-El.
