

Born in Birmingham to Molly and Abraham Shiland on March 2, 1924, Sylvia graduated from Ramsey High School and continued her education at the University of Alabama.
At the age of sixteen, she met the love of her life, Fred Berman. They were married in 1944 and remained so for the next sixty-five years.
Her commitment to philanthropy was only surpassed by her love of family. Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Jeri Berman Davis (Edward), Brenda Weinstein (Steve), her grandchildren, Jared Weinstein, Marla Ostroff (Steve), Brandon Davis (Tanya), Allison Fried (Brandon), her three great grandchildren, Emilia and Alexa Ostroff and Freddy Davis, and her sister-in-law Dorothy Shiland. She is preceded in death by her late husband Fred Berman, her parents Molly and Abraham Shiland, her brother Meyer Shiland, and her sister Evelyn Shiland Hansman.
Her family wants to thank Linda Terrell, Desaree Dean, Ingrid Tucker, Sherie McKinney, and Carolyn Hargrove for their friendship with and care of Sylvia.
A celebration of her life will occur at Temple Beth-el tomorrow, Thursday, November 21, at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Birmingham Jewish Federation or UAB Department of Medicine - Robert Bourge Research Fund.
