A native of Birmingham, Thelma, affectionately called “Mama T” attended Woodlawn High School class of 1955 and Howard College. Thelma’s kind spirit was also filled with the type of creativity most accomplished artists could only dream of. She saw the world through a unique lens which was expressed through design and intricate displays in her home made up of items that carried sentimental value to her. She was known to cover every square inch of ceiling and wall space – mostly of articles – Alabama Football articles to be exact along with posters, art and other precious mementos. A special door frame in her kitchen documented the height of every child and many adults who visited. She had the talent of spotting items that loved ones would enjoy. She had cubbies that served as her “post office” for all her loved ones, stashing these found items to give on their next visit. Her hardwood floors had the most beautiful impressions of leaves she had hand traced or stenciled. You would have thought they were carved into the wood by a master carpenter. She had a massive collection of solar dancing figurines on display in the front room window which made their presence known. On any sunny day you could hear them instantly upon opening the front door which would immediately put a smile on your face.
Thelma was committed to serving others. She faithfully gave her time to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Library for more than forty years – making her the organization’s longest-running volunteer. In early December, she was awarded The Library Champion Award by the Jefferson County Library.
Thelma’s zest for life continued to her last day. For years, she enjoyed playing tennis at Linn Park and Bradford Park. She participated in activities such as Tai Chi, yoga and baked her famous oatmeal cookies among other treats.
Thelma leaves a beautiful legacy. She is loved beyond measure and her memory will be cherished forever. Thelma lived boldly and fully – a true inspiration to all who were fortunate to know her. Visitation will be at Johns-Ridout’s Southside Tuesday, January 2 at 10 a.m. with a graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery at 1 p.m. Pall bearers and honorary pallbearers include Ed Cole, Rob Barnett, Daniel Caneer, Randy Crittenden, Richard DeRieux, Stu Pease, John Stichweh, Daniel Thrift, Drake Thrift, and Steve Tindol.
