Isabel Hernandez Casas was born July 8 ,1921 to Francisca Hernandez her Father was Juan Jose Saenz . They lived for a few years in Durango , Mexico . out of necessity they moved to Juarez , Chihuahua . There they lived a few years struggling then about 1926 or so Melquiades was born they continued the struggle until grand ma and grandpa Carmen started working the fields cotton , tomatoes , chile pretty much everything including cotton Isabel was taken out of school after the 3rd grade and both her and uncle Mel worked the fields with them all over the Southwest : Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California . This continued until auntie Sally was born then grandma stayed behind to care for Mel and Sally the struggle continued as thru years auntie Lilli was born . Life went on until Mom (Isabel) met my dad Ricardo , she pretty much took care of the family until auntie Martha was born by this time Grandma Kika and grandpa Carmen moved to California and Mom married Dad and my brother Jose Carlos was born unfortunately my brother did live to be a year old by the time I was born he had passed
After I was born in 1941 she started working again to provide for me . For several years she tried to form a family with my dad without results . After sending me to grandma Kika to live she started looking into getting a job with stability . She worked in a textile mill for some time , when that was shut down she started to look into hiring on with Levi Straus in El Paso . Finally 1949 She was hired by the factory’s El Paso plant . From then on She remained an employee of Levi Straus where she worked for 37 years .
She had an old school work ethic that is you went to work unless you were dying. In my youth I never saw her miss a day’s work .
When she retire she devoted her time to Gardening , art classes and the Houchen Center of South El Paso . After many attempts to bring her to California in 2002 her health Had declined to the point that we had to go to El Paso several times to care for her she was brought to California with the assurance that she would have her own place . She lived independently until 2011 when she could no longer live alone . the last few years of her life she really wanted to go back to El Paso ; unfortunately that could not be .
My Mom was a not an easy person to get to know or get along with. But when she did was a friend for life as with ; Suki and Louie Tonche her friends from El Paso that now reside in Chula Vista , Alicia and Fernando Carillo . She also did not show affection easily but she was my mom and I loved her . She will be missed.
