With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jose Cruz Moreno (Papa Cruz), who died peacefully on February 17, 2025. He was a man of great strength, kindness, and joy, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and resilience.
Born on May 3, 1945, in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, to Sofia and Inocencio Moreno, Cruz was one of five children. Raised in a home filled with the sounds of Mariachi music, he inherited a deep love for the art from his father, a mariachi musician. At 18, he met the love of his life, Beatriz, and together they began their lifelong journey. In 1972, Cruz made the courageous decision to migrate to the United States, working tirelessly to build a better future for his family. After years of waiting with hope, his loved ones reunited with him in 1980, beginning a new chapter together.
A talented mariachi, Cruz dedicated many years to performing, using his music to bring people together. Whether playing for family gatherings or sharing his passion with the community, his melodies filled hearts with joy, warmth, and unforgettable memories.
Beyond music, he was known for his infectious humor and unwavering positivity, always ready with a joke to brighten even the hardest days. Though he carried himself with strength and determination, he had a heart full of love and generosity. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, he was a guiding presence not only for his own children but also for many nieces and nephews who saw him as a father figure.
Cruz will be remembered for his devotion to family, his passion for mariachi, and his tireless work ethic. He was the heart of his family, always bringing people together through his music and love. His legacy lives on in the traditions, stories, and melodies he passed down to his children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Because of his sacrifices and dedication, his family was given opportunities that shaped their lives today. His love, lessons, and music will continue to echo in the hearts of those he touched.
He is survived by his children, Marisela Rivera and Jorge Moreno, as well as his nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
