Mr. White was born in Cambridge, Ohio, September 11, 1919. His parents, now deceased, were Charles P. and Mary E. (Wilson) White. On June 9, 1947 he married Lois McCulloch at Apollo 1st Methodist Church in Apollo, PA.
Mr. White graduate from Cambridge High School and attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. He was in the Armed Services from 1941 to 1945, during which time he was an officer in the Transportation Corp serving in North Africa and Italy.
Following his service time, Mr. White returned to Muskingum, graduated, and taught high school in Ohio for one year. He then continued his education, receiving his M.A. degree at Northwestern University, and taught for four years at Ripon College while working on his Ph.D. degree, which he received in 1957 from the University of Wisconsin.
Mr. White came to Illinois State Normal University in 1957 as an Instructor in Speech and Director of the Forensic program. Between the years 1957 and 1986, he held several administrative positions. He was Chairperson of the Department of Speech, which in the early days included Theatre, Speech Pathology, and Radio. He was particularly proud to be an assistant to President Samuel Braden. When Dr. White retired in 1986, he had been Dean of the Graduate School for twelve years.
During the years at ISNU, Mr. White enjoyed traveling. He and Lois, his wife, were in England several times, which included Scotland and Ireland. They also traveled in France, Germany, Austria, and Italy. They were on two safaris in Africa-one in East Africa and one in South Africa. The White family took a half semester leave to the University of California at Berkeley. Several Elder Hostels, which included Hawaii, were enjoyable and profitable, and a trip to Alaska was particularly noteworthy.
Surviving are his wife Lois McCulloch White and two sons, Mark C. White and John P. (Lara T.) White. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Adam, James and Sydney Grace White.
Mr. White attended the New Covenant Community in Normal and was for many years a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Normal and a longtime member of the College Alumni Club.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday February 7, 2014 at East Lawn Funeral Home, 1102 Airport Rd. Bloomington, IL 61704. Service will be at 4:00pm Saturday February 8, 2014 at New Covenant Church, 210 W. Mulberry Normal IL 61761.
