Mary was born august 23, 1929, in Richview, IL to Rollo and Grace (Wilson) Johnson. She married the love of her life, Alfred “Al” Leo Fortag on April 17, 1948. Mary enjoyed quilting and working in her garden.
She is survived by her loving husband of 76 years, Al; two children, Donna (David) Thomas of Bloomington, IL and Gerald (Marcia) Fortag of Bloomington, IL; six grandchildren, Brooke (Brian) Tay, Jesse (Sherry) Thomas, Clayton Thomas, Joe-Dan Fortag, Jenny-Lee (Jeremy) Plue and Dara-Lynn (Rob) Golliday; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and ten siblings.
Memorial services to celebrate the life of Mary Ellen will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024 at East Lawn Funeral Home 1102 Airport Road, Bloomington, IL 61704. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday before the service at the funeral home.
