
Nancy was born to James L. and Mary (Ernst) Chapman, Jr. in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 15, 1934. She lived in Terrace Park, Ohio from early childhood through college. She was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. Nancy excelled at athletics, and chose the teaching of physical education as her life’s work. After college, she taught at secondary schools in the Cincinnati area, then came to Normal, Illinois to teach and coach at the college level. She remained at Illinois State University until she retired, earning a doctorate at North Carolina University, Greensboro, while teaching at Illinois State. In her retirement, she gardened, cared for her cats, and took up various craft projects, including jewelry making and quilling, creating lovely gifts for family and friends. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, her sister Sally Augspurger, and her brother Jim Chapman. She is survived by Sally’s husband Ches Augspurger, and by Jim’s wife Christine Chapman, as well as by nine nieces and nephews, and their children all of whom loved her.
Nancy was a strong advocate for women in sports, and established the Nancy L. Chapman Teacher Legacy Foundation at the Women’s Sports Foundation. Memorial’s in Nancy’s name may be made to the Foundation at Eisenhower Park, 1899 Hampstead Turnpike, Suite 400, East Meadow, New York 11554.
