Obituary of Edith Maxine Davis
Maxine Davis, the daughter of Hayden and AnnaBelle Hudson of Calhoun, Kentucky, was born on December 23, 1932, and passed away on April 14, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gene (and Dot) Hudson, sister Wilma (and Carson) Hudson, and sister Elizabeth (and Jimmy) Searcy. Maxine felt most at home with her family, but had an extended family made up of the many friends she made in life as she lived in Louisville and Masonville, Kentucky, followed by Mitchell, Indiana, and her last home of 55 years in Bloomington, Indiana. Maxine's roots in Calhoun's Southern Baptist Church led her to be a lifetime member of the Bloomington Baptist Church on Kimble Drive in Bloomington. She also was a member of the American Legion, where she served as chaplain for 8 years and was nominated as woman of the year. Maxine worked as a waitress at the Hotel Owensboro in Kentucky and at Ladyman's Café on Kirkwood in Bloomington. Maxine worked for over 30 years in the cafeteria at Cook, Inc., before retiring. Throughout her life, Maxine enjoyed volunteer work and shared her time at the Opportunity House, American Legion, Bloomington Hospital, Girl Scouts, and Fairview Elementary School. An outstanding cook, Maxine was known for her persimmon pudding and Sunday fried chicken. She enjoyed watching IU basketball, collecting antiques and anything Betty Boop, and recycling aluminum cans for charity. Maxine’s love of music included hymns, country and western, and particularly big band—to which she danced beautifully. Maxine's greatest joy in life was her children. She inspired in them an early love for libraries and reading, writing, scouts, swimming, band, and camping. And she bravely let them go out into the world on their own to follow their individual paths. She is survived by son Tim Davis of Bloomington, and daughters Bonita Davis (Portland, OR), Kim Davis (Bellingham, WA), and Christy Davis (Silverton, OR). Her living siblings include brothers Billy (and Betty) Hudson and Larry (and Jane) Hudson, and sister Carolyn (and Larry) Eaton. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, April 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Deremiah-Frye Mortuary Greene and Harrell Chapel, 700 W. Gourley Pike. Funeral services will be Friday, April 19, at 11:00 a.m. also in the funeral home. Private family burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
