

Maxine (Smythe) Whitaker passed away peacefully surrounded by family at IU Health Hospice House on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022. She was born in Bloomington, IN on November 11th, 1934 to Herschel and Mamie Porter.
Maxine is survived by her children, Carol (Phillip) Chambers, Debbie (Rick) Erwin, Linda (Don) Cissell, and Mark (Tanya) Smythe; a brother, John (Phyllis) Porter; nine grandkids, Tom (Tami) Chambers, Kevin (Kelly Jo) Chambers, Nathan (Kourtney) Chambers, Lyndsey (Clayton) Willman, Matt (Holly) Erwin, Richie Cissell, Levi (Brittany) Smythe, Austin (Hannah) Smythe, and Tana (Ethan Turner) Smythe; many great grandchildren; and many other beloved family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herschel and Mamie; eight siblings; her first husband, James Thomas Smythe; and her second husband, Joseph Lee Whitaker.
Maxine was a loving, caring woman who was dedicated to taking care of her family. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with family and friends, cleaning, her dog Fifi (who will miss her), and hosting family get-togethers. She was beloved by all (especially her children) and will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 18th 2022, at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary (700 W Gourley Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404) from 11am-1pm. A funeral service will follow at 1pm. A burial of ashes will occur at a later date Little Union Cemetery.
