Just seeing this, 4 years later. I worked with Cary and later Peter, on Wall Street in the 80s, along with Darren Burnett and Steve Auerfeld...we had so much fun together. ..Cary was a talented broker who did very well...it was a few years later, if I recall, he started with his bulldog obsession..Lots of fun memories...shocked and saddened to read this. RIP

Our sadness since learning of Cary’s passing has been overwhelming.

Many of my oldest and fondest memories from our High School and College years are of Cary hanging out at the Partridge Road farmhouse with my brother and I listening to music and reading comic books. Cary was always turning us on to the latest style, and music. His humor, intelligence, and enthusiasm for life were infectious. We loved that he loved hanging with us.

We somehow stayed in contact over the decades and about 10 years ago started meeting every year for San Diego Comic-Con. For 5 years in a row Cary and I ate and reminisced. We commiserated about our struggles with our inner demons. Cary searched endlessly for the perfect gift for his daughter, who he loved and thought about continuously. We saw Stan Lee (RIP) and William Shatner and stood for hours waiting to see some movie preview before anyone else. It was surreal that although events, time, and an entire continent had separated us, we had somehow ended up together… drinking iced tea as insane people in crazy costumes paraded around us. It was a shared moment and a metaphor.

I was reaching out for Cary’s council when a stranger returned my text. In dread, I Googled Cary and found this Memorial Page. Now I am filled with emptiness (my buddy is gone forever) and fear (I do not know what happened to him) and shame (I hadn’t reached out to him sooner). 

We wish his wife and daughter the best. They should know Cary touched me and my family deeply.

Rest in peace old friend. You will always live in our hearts.


Grandma Betty always says to call ... but we know it’s never the right time.  Thanksgiving will be a blast - as your mini me will get to be with the whole fam dam!

We miss you so much that it physically hurts.  Fernando is living in the lap of luxury in his new terrarium and sleeps with me at night, along with our own creation. I cry so much at. Night when they sleep.

How could we  develop  such a  strong  friendship in  such  short period of time?  Sharing moments of joy  or worries strength  our bond and we became good friends. Rest In Peace , my dear friend!!!

I was just sitting at dinner with my fiancé listening to Blossom Dearie and telling her about one of my most interesting friends, Cary APPEL. I went on to the web to find out what he was up to and I see this obituary three weeks after his passing. So sad.  We went to Rutgers together and worked on Wall Street at the same time. He had a meteoric success. He was a good friend and turned me on to Akira Kurosawa films, jazz, monster truck events in MSG and great Chinese food. He had a real lust for life.  Sorry we lost touch but I was glad to have known him. 

Cary, I am so saddened and perplexed right now I do not have words but I am going to try anyway....you were my closest confidante in the world, you let me just be myself and vent when I needed....I have known you exactly 20 years and my heart will not mend from this.  We could talk ten times a day for five minutes or not talk for a month and pick up right where we left off.   You'd ask me to judge your outgoing voicemails to see how they sounded and believe me no human being could be as clever or as funny as you were.   You were the most intelligent person I'll ever know - if I wanted to know anything about world history or politics you'd have the answer.  You were really my best friend.....I am truly heartbroken right now.  My condolences go out to your family, Emma, Phoebe and Lynn.  I am so sorry for your loss and words just seem useless right now and unforgiving. 

I love u !  I miss asking which outfits to wear and you’d always make me wear your clothes .... my jungle boy .... the love shack... and the best is “chewing on glass”

I don’t know where to begin. My life has been turned upside down by this. Amongst the anger and hurt, I remember the years of cleaning and trying to organize your apartment, helping out with Emma, play dates with the kiddos. Out sick sense of humor and love for Netflix finds...dexter, modern family, Vikings, documentaries, religious...not sure if you got around to pesky blinders. The makeshift thanksgivings, the calls for nothing. Think that’s what I’m struggling with the most. My political debate and news conversations are lacking now.  The times we went to speak at places on Friday’s. The countless Indian restaurants we drove to in Davie, , west palm, Miramar and boca. No one else will eat it Indian hot. The large pizzas. The help I got while going through my treatment. The dog fiasco with Maddie and painting her nose for the show. I’m still at a loss as what is next for me but I will learn to find it in me to forgive. Still cannot catch my breath. My friends that I count on my hands are dear. You will be missed. The photo was from a trip to the seaquarium. Those were the days 

I just can’t believe you are gone. I wish I told you more what a great human being I thought you were. How funny, and intelligent, caring, cultured, and curious, and a loyal friend. You had (and still have, I’m sure) a big heart, and you never really once let me down. A fan of the arts (even if it was gigantic Godzilla posters), comics, cuisine,  show dogs, and of course your two daughters. I could always count on you for a reliable Netflix recommendation.  I could always count on you for pretty much anything. Thank you for many good memories, my friend. It breaks my heart that you were taken so soon. I still can’t believe it.  I hope you are home, and at peace, and we see each other again down the road, on the other side. My love goes out to your family.
