Germaine Virginia LeVasseur was born in Morvant/Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago, on January 5, 1944, to Conrad and Eugenia Lewis. She was the fifth of the Lewis’ twelve children. She is predeceased by her eldest son, Curtis Michael Philemon and survived by her sisters, Roslyn Stewart and Monica Sargent, both of Gary, Indiana; her three children, Christian Philemon, Carla White, and Casey Parris; her four grandchildren, Ryan Weston, Destiny Parris, Janay White, and Xavier Parris; and her beloved great-grandchild, Riella Lynn Weston.
Germaine worked for more than 25 years at the Kay Garment Factory in San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago. Earlier in life, she graduated from Bishop Ainsley High School and was a dancer with the Trinidad National Dance Troupe, where she had the honor of performing for the Queen of England during one of her visits to the territory. She was also trained as a cosmetologist, where she developed her passion for fashion, beauty, and personal style.
In the early 1990s, Germaine migrated to the United States and began a second career as a caregiver. She first worked as a CNA and later as a Direct Services Worker with the State of Connecticut, where she served faithfully for ten years until her retirement. Even after retiring, Germaine remained active in her community. She volunteered with NOW Waterbury as a classroom foster grandmother and served as an elder companion, providing companionship and support to elderly individuals in their homes.
Germaine also embraced one of her most cherished roles—that of a dedicated and enthusiastic sports grandmother to her grandchildren, Janay, Ryan, Destiny, and Xavier. She could always be seen and heard at their sporting events, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren, whom she nurtured, encouraged, and guided toward becoming successful young adults.
Janay earned a degree in education from Eastern Connecticut State University. Destiny earned a degree in business from Central Connecticut State University. Ryan attended Naugatuck Valley Community College for auto mechanics and is now working as a BMW mechanic. Xavier is currently training to become a long-haul truck driver.
Germaine was a devout Catholic who believed strongly in being of service to others. She enjoyed going to the casino where she would play the slot machines, playing bingo, and watching her favorite television shows. She especially loved watching Steve Harvey on Family Feud and was a fan of court shows such as Judge Judy, Judge Mablean, and Judge Mathis. Germaine was also an avid sports fan. She loved basketball at both the college and professional levels and was a devoted supporter of the UConn Lady Huskies and the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. She frequently took her grandchildren to Mohegan Sun to watch her team play. Her favorite basketball player was LeBron James. She also enjoyed American football and admired both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
Germaine eventually retired to Boca Raton, Florida, where she lived with her daughter, Carla White, until her passing on Friday, February 27, 2026.
Germaine will be remembered for her strength, generosity, unwavering faith, and the deep love she had for her family. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and through the family she cherished so deeply.
