John L Burke Sr 82 passed away on March 13, 2023, in Boca Raton Florida. He was born on August 19, 1940, in Cleveland Ohio. As a teenager he would split time between Cleveland and Atlantic City, New Jersey where at age 18 he was introduced to the love of his life Patricia. A year later they were married and within six years they had 4 boys John Jr, Patrick, Billy and Ted.
John worked at the Traymore Hotel in Atlantic City as a Blue Seal engineer and part-time for Powell Plumbing. In 1969 he began his 25-year Atlantic Electric career at the B.L. England Power Plant. At the Power Plant there was plenty of overtime available therefore he had no need to keep his part-time job, so he turned in the Powell Plumbing van and tried to quit but the next morning he looked out the window and the van was back out in front of the house. His boss didn’t want to lose such a skilled hard working young man. At Atlantic Electric he moved on from the Power Plant to the Substation where he met several lifelong friends. From the Substation he moved over to Transportation where he met more of his friends and finished his career there as a Storekeeper 1.
Every year John would take his family on summer vacation and joke, “It’s gonna be strictly driving this year!” Also, there were many ski vacations with friends and their families where many wonderful memories were made. We always enjoyed the Atlantic Electric picnics with his buddies and their families.
John had 5 grandchildren Zach (Tiffany), Maddie, JB, Hunter and Hannah and steps Vincent and Stephanie. When the kids were with Pop-Pop all rules went out the window and the Living room was converted into a carnival with toys tied to the ceiling fans flying in a blur. He loved going out for burgers with Hunter A.K.A. THE H-MAN on Saturdays. He loved all his grandchildren dearly and was always there for them.
John was a member of Victory Church in Boca Raton where he was always faithful to lend a helping hand whenever called upon. Thank you, Pastor Don, for praying with him at the hospital!
John was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years Patricia Walsh Burke, his mother Anna Mae Yoxheimer, his sister Thomasine Pergament and his niece Theresa Entrekin Schick. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his sons John Jr, Patrick (Rechel), Billy (Marianne), Ted, his nephew Steve Schick and his beloved grandchildren.
In April a Christian Celebration of Life will be held privately in Boca Raton Florida.
