My grandfather has been the most important and influential person in my life. He supported and encouraged my every endeavor, generously helping me achieve my dreams. He was always proud of my achievements, and I could always count on his love, support, and wisdom. I strived to make him proud by fulfilling his hopes and dreams for my future.
I remember back to my high school and college years when he would always say to me: “focus on your studies and education. Forget about boys. They will only distract you. You need to study.” And I – mostly – did. I remember when I was in medical school and rotating throughout hospitals when he would say: “I think it’s time for you to find a husband. Another doctor, who would share your interests, would be best.” And, I did. I also remember when I completed residency and was finally finished with studying and training, when he said to me: “I think it’s now time for you to have a baby.” And while I wish I could say I did, I have not yet been able to fulfill his, now final, request before he was taken away from us.
But the person I am today is largely because of my grandfather’s influence in my life. And much of my accomplishments, I attribute to his never ending love and support.
I will miss him for the rest of my life, but he is still a part of me; his laughter and support live in my memories, and the love he gave me is in every breath that I take. I loved him every day. And now I will miss him every day as my grandfather was and always will be my hero.
