Born on September 20, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, Peter lived a life of ambition, accomplishment, and generosity. He spent his formative years at LaSalle Military Academy where he made lifelong friendships. A proud graduate of Villanova University, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the College of Commerce and Finance in 1959. His passion for business led him to later receive an Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree from Villanova.
Peter had a long career in the oil and gas industry, which began at Whaleco, a small heating oil company founded by his father in Brooklyn. Peter purchased the company and transformed it into one of the largest petroleum retailing corporations in the Northeast. He later founded The PJC Group, Inc., a venture capital and manufacturing firm. In 1993, The PJC Group acquired Champion Energy Corporation, which he led as chairman and chief executive officer.
Peter was deeply committed to the advancement of the heating oil industry, serving as president of the New York Heating Oil Association and a director of several petroleum organizations. Through his work with the National Oil Research Alliance (NORA), he championed cleaner, more efficient fuel technology, testifying before congress and speaking passionately at industry events. His contributions earned him the honor of being named Man of the Year by the Metropolitan Energy Council in 1996.
Peter was a passionate philanthropist, who gave generously to causes he believed in, including the Angel Guardian Home, The Boys Club of America, Americares and Villanova University.
Peter always prioritized time with his family and found joy in both adventure and education. He was an avid skier who happily spent 30 winters with his loved ones at Ski Windham, regardless of the conditions. A lifelong learner with a fondness for autobiographies, Peter could often be found with a pipe in one hand and a book in the other, amid the joyful chaos of a house full of rambunctious teenagers or aboard a sailboat at full heel. His love for sailing and storytelling earned him membership to the New York Yacht Club, and he was well known for his ability to charm an audience with his heartfelt chuckle, warmth, and a cough drop.
Peter will be remembered for his intelligence, generosity, humor, his fixation on the weather, and an unwavering love for his family.
Peter is survived by his wife Carol Carini, his 7 children (Joseph Peter Carini, Peter Joseph Carini, Jr., Thea Marie Carini, Christopher Alfred Carini, Dana Marie Carini, Mary Angela Carini, Elena Marie Williamson and their mother, MaryAnn Carini Giordano); his 15 grandchildren (Celia, Leo, Gregory, Caitlin, Mara, Gaby, Julien, Celine, Axel, Peter, Charlie, Euan, Jett, Thatcher and E.J.); his sister Anne Pidoriano; three of his stepsons (Keith, Pat and Michael); and his step grandchildren (Christopher, Jayden, Nicky, Cole, Michael and A.J.). He is predeceased by his beloved stepson Nicholas Rattenni.
May he now be enjoying a good book and his evening pipe in peace.
