Robert “Bob” Bannon passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23rd 2018 surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on September 3rd, 1930 in Medford, MA, the son of John Joseph and Catherine (Nagle) Bannon. He attended Malden Catholic Boys School for twelve years. On August 12th, 1951 he married Elizabeth “Betty” Nesbit, the love of his life. They were married in historic St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic Church in Somerville, MA.
On February 13th, 1951, Bob joined the Navy and was stationed in the Mediterranean during the Korean War. When he returned he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He first worked at IBM in Kingston, NY and then moved to IBM’s Boca Raton, FL campus when it first opened in 1968. He was always proud to be a lifelong IBM-er, and he was granted a number of patents for his inventions there. In 1974 he received a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont and returned to warm and beautiful Boca soon afterward.
Bob will be lovingly remembered for his intelligence, integrity, kindness, sense of humor, and golf game, including his hall-of-fame hole-in-one. Bob was an unflagging devotee of Boston sports teams: the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics. As a teenager he worked at Fenway Park–and proudly told Betty so in their very first conversation. Along with her, he fervently supported the Red Sox throughout his life, celebrating as they finally won the World Series in 2004. And of course, he stood by the Patriots long before they were the winning team they are today. He was a proud and happy fan when they finally won the Super Bowl in 2001.
Bob cherished spending time with his beloved family, who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter Barbara Bannon (Lake Worth, FL); his daughter and son-in-law Mary Bannon and Laurence Roth (Selinsgrove, PA); his daughter and son-in-law Deirdre and Sean Donnelly (Atlanta, GA); his son and daughter-in-law Robert and Carol Anne Bannon (Lake Worth, FL); and his grandchildren Brian Lucas, his wife, Lisa, Garrett Donnelly, Jonah Roth, and Craig Bannon.
