Ms. Varnam was born in Brunswick County on September 24, 1924 and was the daughter of the late Richard B. Holden and Rushia Clemmons Holden. Following the death of her mother when she was a young child she was cared for by Willard and Callie Grissett.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-four years, Wesley Garland “Honey” Varnam; sisters, Mamie Hewitt and Wilma O’Quinn, both of Wilmington; a brother Norman Holden of Charlotte; and a son-in-law Hugh Brown of Bolivia.
She was a lifelong member of Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church where she lovingly served. She was the organist; a role she proudly had until her sickness. Throughout the years, she was the church treasurer and secretary, choir member and treasurer of the ladies club, and also served on many church committees. She took pride in seeing the recently remodeled fellowship hall.
Being a gentle spirited lady, she is fondly remembered for her cooking, sewing, crocheting and gardening. Her hands have prepared countless meals, served and blessed with love. Favorites through the years include her famous baked flounder, shrimp and gravy, cookie pudding, homemade biscuits and cornbread. She loved crocheting doll dresses, blankets, and newborn outfits for her great grandchildren. She graciously sewed countless items for the annual oyster roast at her church. She loved her blooming flowers and took pride in their beauty. She always made sure the flowers were planted and watered at church, even during her sickness.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter Barbara Brown of Bolivia, her sons, Donald Varnam (Mary) of Supply, Ronald Varnam (Jencie) of Bolivia, and Garland Nicholas Varnam (Jackie) of Supply. She is survived by her brothers Robert Holden of Supply and Lindberg Holden of Whiteville and sisters, Joyce Robinson of Supply and Dot Brown of Wilmington. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Mike Brown (Karen), Cindy Creech (Gordan), Chandee V. Champion (Danny), Melissa Brown, Dana Varnam(Tirso Gonzalez), Serena V. Bowman (Mike), Sabrina Varnam, April V. Owens (Matt), Jason Varnam (Faith), and Molly Renegar (Mark), sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday July 20, 2016 at six o’clock in the evening at Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend William Negron and Reverend Anthony Clemmons officiating. An interment service will follow in the church cemetery.
