Ms. Messer was born July 20, 1942, daughter of the late Doc and Darcus Connor. She attended Harvest Fellowship Church in Shallotte. Ms. Messer was very involved in sports. She was a well-known softball coach at Lockwood Folly for many years. After she was unable to play, she still enjoyed coaching the team and cheering them on from the sidelines. She also held the title of Women’s Powderpuff Champion for dirt track racing for over 8 years. She loved the outdoors. Fishing, gardening, growing vegetables, and watching her chickens made her happy. Her good natured and giving personality drew her close to many people. She never met a stranger and would put others’ needs above herself. She will be missed by many. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by many brothers and sisters and a granddaughter, Jessica Jackson.
Survivors include her children, Pamela “PJ” Messer of Holden Beach, Jennifer Jorgensen and husband Ric of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Ira “Leon” Messer, Jr. and wife Heather of Southport; sister, Rose Williams of Holden Beach; four grandchildren, Ashton Messer, Randy Jackson and wife Jacqueline, Jake Messer, and Lucas Messer; and six great grandchildren, Caleb, Jamie, Ellie, Connor, Kali, and Audrey.
