He was born on February 7, 1967 in Tucson, Arizona. After his parents passed at an early age, he and his sister Shelly were welcomed in by family in Sentinel, Oklahoma. There they grew up alongside countless friends, neighbors and four new brothers.
Gunar found countless interests in the close-knit farming community around him. Amongst the big American automobiles and heavy agricultural machinery, he developed an affinity for all things mechanical, a passion he would carry all his life. As a young man he drove tractors, tinkered with cars, and was a member of the Future Farmers of America. He and his siblings worked hard and found endless ways to entertain themselves in the countryside. He knew everyone in town.
Graduating salutatorian from Sentinel High School, Gunar left for Norman to attend the University of Oklahoma. Gunar was a proud member of the ATO fraternity at OU, initiated in the spring of 1987. “Gunar was simply the best. Just the sweetest and kindest soul that I’ve ever met and he was universally loved”. Gunar also had the coolest car/motorcycle combination on campus with a stereo system to match, everything from The Cult to "Milli Vanilli" could be heard for miles. Gunar loved OU and the friends he made there. He would remain a hardcore Sooners fan and attended at least one football game a year.
Gunar obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Pharmacy in 1991. He began a pharmacy career that would cover the full span of the profession, starting in retail before working in home health, hospital, then finally opening his own local pharmacy.
Two years later came an even more important milestone. On a blind date in Dallas set up by mutual friends, Gunar met Lori Bliss Patterson. Both of them would often recall how she couldn’t even look at him the entire night because of how handsome he was. Eleven months later they would be married at Thorn Crown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 1994. In 1998 Gunar and Bliss had Gage Thomas Stowers (Texas) and in 2004 had Aubrey Rae Stowers (North Carolina) and then the true fun began. Gunar loved sharing all of his passions with his children and loved being involved in all of theirs, including dance/violin recitals, musicals, lacrosse, field hockey games and cross country meets. The four loved traveling together around NC, the United States and abroad. The family enjoyed camping, boating, hiking and snow-skiing together.
Gunar was a member of the Sentinel Baptist Church growing up and would share many wonderful stories about his time at Falls Creek Summer Church Camp where he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. The family became members of Calvary Baptist Church in North Carolina in 2000 and participated as Care Group leaders, was a member of the choir, helped in the nursery and played softball/basketball on the church’s team. They transferred membership to Emmanuel of Winston Salem in 2018 and were very blessed to be shepherd and loved by Pastor Alex and the congregation.
Gunar opened Robinhood Family Pharmacy in 2011 near their home in Winston-Salem, NC. Everyone that walked in the door or even pulled in the parking lot had his full attention. He would personally drive out deliveries after hours, walk out to the drive-thru in winter to administer flu shots, and gained a reputation as someone who could fix anything. Gunar worked on anything anyone brought to him, from broken iPhone screens to cars that wouldn’t start. It was truly a family business with his father-in-law doing deliveries, his children helping on the retail side and his wife running the business end. The pharmacy continues to be successful today due to his hard work, the trust the community placed in him and the staff that carries on his legacy.
Gunar enjoyed everything and was always in motion. He was a savant when it came to mechanical and electrical work. He loved music and film, constantly rewiring and updating the entertainment systems of wherever he lived. He loved vehicles, there was nothing he couldn’t do or fix with an automobile. Gunar bought a beaten and stripped Porsche 928 chassis, a dream car featured in many of his favorite movies. He completely restored it from scratch, putting in an all-new engine, interior, and electrical systems. He and his brothers in Oklahoma sanded and repainted it together. He loved driving it around town and attending car shows.
Gunar was preceded by death by his father Major Aubrey Eugene Stowers Jr and Bette Ann Stowers: Carl Dean Celsor and Vicki Jan Celsor.
He lived knowing his best accomplishments in life were being a husband to Bliss, a father to Gage (26), and Aubrey (21), a brother to Scott, Joe, Ron, Shelly, and Sam, uncle, cousin, nephew, in-law and a friend to many.
In the Lord’s kindness He led Gunar far away from the pain and suffering and delivered him to Himself for eternity. “It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him” 2 Timothy 2:11
Celebration Of Life will be held at a later date.
