
Mrs. Hawes was born in Brunswick County on November 24, 1940 and was the daughter of the late Percy and Lottie Wilson Russ. She was a graduate of East Carolina University and a member of the ADK Teachers Sorority. She served the Brunswick County School System as a teacher for over thirty years. She was a member of Bolivia Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Vacation Bible School Director. Mrs. Hawes was an avid college sports and Tarheels fan and loved to travel.
She is survived by her husband Douglas Hawes; three daughters, LaDeane Hawes of Chapel Hill, Amelia McMahan and son-in-law Scott of Boiling Spring Lakes, Rebekah Hawes and son-in-law Dylan Coombs of Durham; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jessica, Olivia, Daniel, Carson, Gawain, Gareth; a brother, Phillip Russ of Longwood, and a sister, Judi Russ of Longwood.
Funeral services will be held Thursday October 12th, 2017 at eleven o’clock in the morning at the White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel, Supply with Reverend Landis Lancaster and Reverend Chris Driggs officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Bolivia.
Friends are invited to a time of visitation with the family on Wednesday evening from six o’clock until eight o’clock at White Funeral and Cremation Service, 603 Ocean Highway, Bolivia.
In lieu of customary remembrances memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va. 23060 or a charity of one’s choice.
