July 28, 1945 - May 18, 2025
Vito Scarola, affectionately known as Mr. Womble (and Mr. S to his children’s friends) entered the world of the immortal on May 18, 2025, at 6:12 pm after a short illness. Vito was born in 1945 as one of six children at the tail end of WW II in Grumo, a small town in the Puglia region of Italy. He was the third oldest child, and the eldest boy. His birth certificate had his birthdate 7 days earlier, as his Uncle claimed his birth a week early to get an extra loaf of bread in war torn Italy.
Vito’s first big adventure was when he came to America on the ocean liner, the Andrea Doria (a few months before it sank) at 10 years old. His family settled in Brooklyn, and he went on to meet his wife, Jeannette, and own various businesses, starting with New York Contractors, then New Era Kitchens & Baths and Italian Food World. In 1995, he and Jeannette relocated to North Carolina, where Vito started Carolina Creations - manufacturing seamless, solid surface counter tops. Vito was a craftsman, and has left his mark on each of his family homes, and also shared his skills with his son, also known for his beautiful work.
Retiring to Oak Island NC in 2011, Vito enjoyed tinkering in the yard, keeping up the house, fishing, and cooking for visiting friends and family - of which there were many over the years. His pizza and stuffed clams are the stuff of legend.
He was predeceased by his parents, Michael & Grazia, his sister, Nancy, brother-in-law, Don Foky, and favorite dogs - Ben, Jerry and Lucky. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 52 years, Jeannette, his beloved children, Stephanie (Judd Carrier) and Vito, his grand pup, Lukie, a brother, and three sisters, sister-in-law, Josephine Foky, and countless nephews, nieces, especially Trudy (Charley) Hohl, and life long friends.
To know Vito was to love him - he was a tinkerer and a dreamer, and a gentle man - loved by people and pets alike. We miss him greatly, and would do anything for one more day…but we are so incredibly grateful for him and for his blessed life, we hold him in our hearts and will look for signs of him. We love you Mr. Womble.
