She is the only grandmother I had growing up. People would always tease me that I sound like her but I like to take it as a compliment because she is my lola. She was there for my family during the times my family couldn't even afford to have a decent meal. I remember bringing her bayabas and bagoong as I stood outside the gate and she would give me trenta pesos. Lola Mel was a great grandmother, loud but very loving. She adored her grandchildren so much and she's proud to call them her own. She would always make fun of our Tatay Bodjie because she didn’t believe that we got our looks and brains from him. Lola Mel’s a legend, loved by many and will be remembered for the life she shared with others. I love you, Lola Ateng.

Lola Mel will always be in my heart and mind—as a person who will cheer you up during times of insecurity and need. She may not be the sweetest of all grandmothers but I can assure you that she’ll see to it that you will feel loved and secured whenever you’re with her. Lola also serves as a testament of faith in humanity in terms of respect for others regardless of your status in life. I’ll surely miss her inspiring stories about life which even Google cannot tell me. I miss you lola, I know you’re happy now in God’s arms. We love you!

Lola Mel did not have the riches and the power yet she was able to touch so many lives throughout her lifetime. She was known for being straightforward yet people admired and respected her even more. She used to radiate joy when she’s still alive; now, people are grieving for her death.

You will be remembered, Lola Mel. Mahal kita! ❤️

Lola Mel was a genuinely happy woman. She was a dancer, a witty story-teller, a comedian, and a loving and playful grandmother. But I could remember as early as 6, her then 65, just how comfortably she spoke about her plans for when she passed. Just like her, it was always simple and straight to the point. A small gathering with family filled with laughs and joyful comfort. 

With my child-like mind, I never understood it - being so comfortable with your own death. Today, grappling with the emotions that come with losing her, I come to terms as to why. 

She lived a beautiful and brimful life. Her stories, the stories of people about her, my memories with and of her are testament to just how. She taught me that friendship should know no prejudice. To her, genuine interaction with others was second nature. She was a powerhouse, the way people, of close or no relation to her, naturally gravitated towards her incredible stories, jokes, and upright nature. This was how she chose to do her part.

The last time we spoke more than a year ago, I told her “La, I’m going now”. She says, “you darned child, always up and leaving”.

I want to thank her for how much of a force she was to me. That anywhere I go, knowing that I was Mely's grand-daughter was more than enough to ground me. And for that, I am incredibly lucky. Salamat, La. 

Lola Mel loved being around children, and children loved being around Lola Mel... everyone did. 

She was a rare force. She would be direct and honest with you, but always genuine and caring. 

Her stories would trick you into thinking you were listening to something small, but you would finish listening and end up pondering fundmental truths of love, tragedy, and life. 

She remains a vibrant force, she will be missed by many. I love you my dear Lola Mel. 

Lola Mel was and continues to be the most influential woman of my life. Her endless love, laughter, and stories helped me become the young lady I am today. She has touched the hearts of so many, and I am very honored to call her my grandmother. 

She is our clown in the family and a loving auntie.

Tita Mel was an inspiration to anyone that met her, whether they knew her for an hour or a lifetime.   As a little girl, I remember her singing this song and often she will turn to me and say “what will be, will be.”  

She was larger than life itself.  She always had a sarcastic quip in any and every conversation.  But she also had a heart of gold and she brought light everywhere she went.   

We will miss you Tita Mel.
