 As I stare, blank-minded into space, I couldn’t help but look back at my life. Reflecting who I am as a person, the things I am proud of and also the many things I hold dear. My values. That’s the word. I value basketball, I value love, and I value loyalty. I could write pages full of the qualities of values and how much I appreciate them, but these things I call values, I thought, must’ve came from somewhere, maybe something? No, someone. It’s crazy to believe how much impact one could have on people. At the hospital, when all of the family was there to see you, I was in chills to see how many of us came in support for you. I scrolled through this page and I see all these memories our family has made for you. The influence you’ve made on our family showed during those times and you didn’t even have to ask. These values I hold come from nobody else but you. Basketball, I played during my childhood days with Kuya Van with the purple plastic hoop. There was a phase we would play all the time up front during family parties until the neighbors took the hoop away. The unconditional love you’d show me whenever I would come to mess around with you made me comfortable to express my true self to my friends as well. You never abandon us, never lost hope in us, always stayed loyal, believing that no matter the stupid stuff going on in my life, I would still graduate college. Without this family YOU have made, I would not be nowhere near who I am now. We are your legacy, and i’ll never forget that nor you. I love you Apu. 



My lasting memories of you are simple yet every moment is priceless. No words or pictures can best describes you Inang.  Everyday to be with you is a treasure from Heaven that I will not forget.  Thank you for everything you have given us and the warmth loved we shared together.  I will be your forever malagung anak mu.

I had known my mother-in-law, Nanay Cion, for 27 years, and she was the best. I still remember the very first time I met her in April 1992.  She took me in as her own son, a total stranger and even invited me to stay for dinner to which I duly obliged. She was very generous, kind hearted and  puts her family's well being well ahead of hers.  Nanay Cion is not extravagant nor flashy but likes the little things instead. She  appreciates the smallest token because she knew you made the effort to do something for her. 
I will definitely miss you. I wish I could've done more and maybe spent a little more time with you.  I love you, Inang, and I miss you – every day. I will do my best to be a good husband to your daughter. I will always remember that unconditional love is possible and I will spend my life trying to love everyone unconditionally – just the way you did. Thank you for that. 

Inang, I can't still believe that you're gone.  I miss you a lot.  I will miss the call when I'm on the bus going home to tell me to come to your house  and eat.  It was so hard for us to let you go but knowing now that you are free pain that we can accept now that you are with God almighty.   Rest in peace and we promise you that we will raking care of tatang.  I love you so much i

i will miss apu a lot. whenever i came over, with my brothers or with my parents, she always asked me if i ate. there was always food there and she made sure that i ate. once i was done eating, she would go back to playing her card games. i will always remember her as a fun, kind, and caring soul. she will always have a special place in my heart and it hurts to know that i will not see you again, but i know that heaven got a good angel. i love you apu, rest easy. 

I’m going to miss apu very much.  I always remember the time when she used to feed me and my family. She would always check on me to make sure i was doing well. She would always make me smile. Whenever i saw her happy, i was happy. She would always cook me fish. She would ask me every thursday when i would go to her house, she was like “do you want me to make fish next thursday” and I would always say yes. Then she would check on me after school to see if i ate. Then i would say i’m gonna go eat right now she would always get up get me rice, fish, and soysause. But it was sad letting her go, but the good thing is that she’s in a better place now. She’s not in anymore pain. I know it was hard for a lot of people. But you have to look on the bright side. Without her none of us would be here right now. We should be grateful for that. But one goes and one comes. My very last words to her was “I love you apu”. I mean like this is how life goes. It’s the circle of life. All I want to do right now is give her a big hug. But she will always be in my heart. She’ll be in all of our hearts. She will be watching us and making sure we’re ok even though she’s not with us. It was really hard for all of us. Seeing her go was really sad. But god received a great person up in heaven. I wish I can turn the clock around and go back in time and spend as much time with her. But at the end of the day we would always love her. She would always love us back. Love you apu.

There’s no pin pointing my favorite memory of you considering that everything you did was memorable. I will always cherish the times when you would let me sleep in your room when my mom and dad came home late from work. All the countless meals that you’ve cook to make sure that I always ate. I also remember the card game (41) that we used to play along with my mom and auntie Lani, it was very competitive considering that there was money involved, but every time you won I would always see you with a big smile on your face. When we used to live right next door you would always check up on us and bring some food to make sure we ate even though you could barely walk at the time. I’m going to miss all the jokes that we used to crack on each other and all of the handshakes we made. It’s sad the day before you’re passing we did our last and final handshake, and the smile you had right after is one that will always stick with me. I’ll never forget how loving and caring you were Apu,  and I promise I won’t take this life for granted. I love and miss you soo much!!!

I used to live with Apu Cion when my family and I moved from Japan to California. She used to take care of me because my siblings would be at school and my parents would be working. Though there was a language barrier, she never failed to make sure my needs were fulfilled and that I was healthy. Apu used to feed me grapefruits with sugar and peanuts while watching Tom and Jerry, she introduced me to pandesal with coffee, and she unknowingly taught me how to be kind at all times. I’m sorry that as I got older I portrayed myself as disdainful and inconsiderate, and I’m sorry that I never visited you as often when I should have. I will always be thinking of you Apu, thank you for everything. 

One of my fave memories of apu was when I was younger she would feed me like A LOT of food and I would say no more but she would still put food on my plate. When I was growing up and going to her house she always asked if I was fed and how is school. I can always see her walking outside from her room with a smile and just hearing her say “ Hi Ren “ and she waves too. Through all the times I took her to her doctor appointments she would say “ let me buy you food “ she has the purest kind heart that I’ll never forget.  We have over probably tons of selfies and videos from Snapchat one thing I’ll never forget about apu was how caring and loving she was to everyone. I love you apu. I miss and love you! 

When I was a kid, not even old enough to go to school yet. I was her youngest grandchild at the time. Apu would be the one to not just watch me but take care of me. When my mom used to work late night I remember Apu cion would lay down next to me and snore pretty loud til she got home. Now I just think about her in my head and I see her face, looking up at me with her pretty smile.. I still can’t believe that from now on, when I walk into the house that I grew up in with you, I won’t be able to bring you flowers on mother’s day or your birthday anymore. I hope you hear me speaking to you when I do, and know that I love you forever Apu. You gave me a piece of your life so I could grow up. When you left a piece of my soul went with you. I love you Apu cion.

I retired from the US Navy and didn't work a whole year. One week after she learned that, she tried to give me money. She worried that my family will not have enough to pay for our bills. Of course I graciously declined. That was how  generous she was to her children, and grandchildren.  She's likened to the widow in the Bible who offered her last penny to the Lord. I miss you already Inang. Thank you for the love and care. Don't worry about us all but rest in our Lord's Eternal Peace.
