Corey James Garvin was born on the 27th Day of November in 1989 in San Diego, California. His parents, Mark and Patricia, raised him in Chula Vista where he attended school from Kellogg Elementary, to Hilltop Middle and High Schools through Southwestern College.
When Corey was 3 and 1/2 years old his brother Shane was born and Corey immediately took over caring for and protecting him. Corey and Shane had their brotherly quarrels but Corey always looked at his brother with pride and caring.
As a kid Corey was a vibrant character who made friends everywhere he went. It was very few people who could help but smile when he smiled at them. It seemed his ambition in life to get people to smile and laugh.
One of his most proud accomplishments was when he was only 10 years old he was accepted into The Gulls Roller Hockey Club. He started playing roller hockey when he was only seven years old and it continued to be his one great passion through out his life. His home is lined with trophies and medals from years of competing. He was an intensely competitive athlete.
Corey traveled to various places around North America as well as Europe. He vacationed in Canada and Wyoming, went river rafting in Northern California and house boating on Lake Powell in Utah. He loved to snow board and went on many snow trips to Big Bear and Mammoth Mountain. He enjoyed camping and hiking. He also enjoyed a good party.
Corey made some special friends in recent years that became like brothers and will continue to be a part of Corey's family. They are Sean Henning, Richard Langston, Amir Mohsenzadeh, and Stevie Hernz, Francis Gomez and Anthony Banouvong.
Last year he had the pleasure of visiting Barcelona Spain as well as a tour of Italy's great cities. He went with a group of his student peers for a study abroad through Southwestern College. There he made friends who became his "Barcelona Family" and continued to gather with them after the trip was over.
Over the last six months of his life his health had begun to suffer due to an existing arthritic condition. But he continued to pursue as much joy in life as he could find until the last month when he became critically ill from a complication of his condition. He fought a brave battle to overcome the illness and all the doctors and nurses at Kaiser Hospital fought like warriors as well to try to recover his health and comfort him.
Corey passed away on Saturday evening July 30, 2011. He is survived by his mother Patricia, his father Mark, and his brother Shane.
His service will be at 1 O'clock in the afternoon on Saturday August 6th, 2011 at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in the Chapel of the Roses. His final resting place will be beside the Lake of Dreams in Glen Abbey Memorial Park.
