Eduardo Adolfo Alegre
July 6, 1925 – February 16, 2014
BIOGRAPHY.
Born in San Antonio, Zambales, a small city in the Islands of the Philippines, on July 6, 1925, Eduardo Adolfo Alegre (also known as “Danding” to many of his loved ones), began the journey of his wonderful life. Eduardo was the son of Quirino Alegre and Gregoria Adolfo. He was a beloved brother to his older sisters, the late Leoning Adolfo Alegre and Deling Adolfo Alegre. His father remarried and Eduardo was blessed with three more younger siblings: Libertard, Pining, and Reynaldo.
Eduardo’s mother, Gregoria, passed away when Eduardo was just a young boy. After his mother’s death, he lived with and was raised by his aunt, Paz Alegre Ladrillono, and her husband Gregorio Ladrillono. Paz treated Eduardo like her own son. He grew up with Paz’s five children, who he treated like his own younger siblings. He was especially very close to Paz’s oldest and only daughter, Helen Alegre Ladrillono Paje, which is also the best friend of Eduardo’s youngest sister, Pining.
As a young man, Eduardo was so full of life and lived every moment of it. He did not waste an inch of life. He loved his family and friends, but as a well-respected man, in 1945, Eduardo proved himself by joining The United States Navy. His Uncle Gregorio, husband of Paz, encouraged Eduardo and also became his mentor during his difficult times in the service.
Finally, Eduardo met the love of his life, the beautiful Virginia Vicente Alegre. They tied the knot on September 6, 1949 at Holy Infant Catholic Church in San Antonio, Zambales. They had five beautiful children: Nestor, Nenita, Edna, James, and Robin. Out of Eduardo’s best intentions, he decided to raise his children in the Philippines. He thought it best and also decided that if the kids grew up in the United States, there would be more obstacles to overcome. Eduardo remained part of the United States Military until he retired in 1964. He could finally enjoy his retired life with his wife and kids in the Philippines. Unfortunately, Eduardo’s eldest son, Nestor, was taken at an early age by the Father Almighty. Eduardo and Virginia were truly devastated to have lost their oldest son. With the strength of such a strong family bond, they helped one another through the tough times and together they continued on with life and made memories that lasted a lifetime. Eduardo built his family a beautiful three-bedroom house in San Antonio, which they lived in for twenty years before deciding it was time to return to the United States.
Eduardo’s third oldest, Edna, married her husband Manolito Ferrer Cabiles. They were blessed with Eduardo’s first grandson, Al Eduard, who they named after Eduardo. A couple years later Eduardo’s second grandson, Tristan, was born. A few years later the family was blessed with Eduardo’s first granddaughter who they named Joanna Mae.
Four years later, Eduardo’s oldest daughter, Nenita, who at the time still lived in the Philippines, had a baby girl and named her Jessa Pauline. She came to California at the age of four, where she could finally be reunited with her grandfather and family. A year after Eduardo met his fourth grandchild, Jessa, he was blessed with one more grandchild, a boy, who was named Brian. Brian is the son of Eduardo’s fourth oldest child, James, and his wife, Violy Franco Alegre. Alas, the big family that Eduardo always wanted came true.
Eduardo was a very hardworking man who lived life with a passion, even in the midst of all the hardships. He loved his family and found strength within them, as they found theirs within him. Eduardo danced, sang, and laughed his entire life away. He did not stop living every second of his life. A couple years before his death, his body and memory began to slowly deteriorate, but he continued to stay strong and live his life the way he always had as a young boy. He passed away peacefully on Sunday February 16, 2014 at his home with his family.
Eduardo was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a son, a brother, a friend and most importantly a son of the Father Almighty. Rest in peace Eduardo “Danding” Adolfo Alegre. You will remain in the memories and hearts of your loved ones. You will be missed dearly.
