Luis was born on September 10, 1925 in the Philippines. After he graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy for the opportunity to see the world he had studied in his geography classes, while building a secure career to support his future family.
After he completed his training, Luis returned to the Philippines to marry his wife, Purita. They raised five children together throughout his Naval career. The Navy reinforced in Luis honor, discipline and respect--values he learned as a child and also instilled upon his children as a father. Luis’ commitment in proudly serving the Navy also earned him 2 good conduct medals, a promotion to Chief Petty Officer and other achievement medals throughout his Navy career.
Luis showed his love for others through his actions, whether it was making coffee and breakfast for his wife when she re-started her teaching career, spending quality time with grandchildren (iPhone texting lessons with Jessica!), or partnering with Purita to help the Bicol Club with its community-building projects. Luis served on the Bicol Club’s Board of Directors, and fully supported his wife as she took on leadership roles throughout the years
Luis liked to relax and “be still”, but he was active until his last days, working and walking in his beloved garden. One of his favorite trees was an avocado tree he grew from a seed he threw into his soil. Luis nurtured and loved this tree as he nurtured and loved the people in his life -- always noticing what the tree needed and making sure he provided nutrients to keep the tree growing and producing bountiful fruit that he enjoyed sharing -- this is the way he lived his life. When his loved ones were in need he always found a way to help. Luis was truly loved by his wife, children and grandchildren, and his many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, granddogs and grandcat!
