I just now learned of Lygia’s passing. I am so very sorry to hear of the sad news. I had no idea she passed away 3 years ago. Our deepest condolences to Uncle Prudencio, Auntie Adeling, and Prudy. We feel your pain. May loving memories of Lygia bring you all comfort and strength. 

Lygia’s presence had a way of emitting spark and laughter.  One of my fondest memories of Lygia was going on bike rides with her. She was the leader of the pack and we would all trail along. She was the oldest —  only 10, I was 8, her little brother was 7, and the others were as young as 4 yrs old.  She gave the encouragement to learn how to ride a bike and taught us to use hand signals while we rode our bikes to the neighborhood park and the library living in Hawaii in the early ‘60s.  Nobody wore helmets in those days, but nobody got head injuries. Nobody had iPhones in those days, but we had transistor radios listening to the event of John Glenn  orbiting the moon. We only had simple things in life in those days and Lygia had the spark to make it fun! 

She loved to read and instilled her love for reading in us while frequenting bike trips to the library. With her age 10 knowledge and recommendation of books, I read biographies of Juliette Lowe, Dolly Madison, and Abigail Adams at the time. 

She was a dedicated 10-yr old Girl Scout and JGP (Junior Girl Patrol) while we attended Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary. She would blow her whistle whenever she spotted kids misbehaving at the school yard.

As a young kid, she loved to draw,  loved singing in choir during Xmas holidays, loved listening to the Beach Boys and the Beatles. We all enjoyed watching the Patty Duke Show,  Ozzie and Harriet, The Outer Limits, etc. and we would all talk about it the day after while carpooling to school.  Because of her, I draw some of my fondest childhood memories when we lived in Hawaii. Farewell my friend. You rock!  May your spark continue to bring joy and laughter to those around you in heaven above. 


Lygia was a wonderful person with a beautiful soul. She had the most sincere smile and infectious laughter.  She could make you feel happy whenever she was near.  Please know that she will be forever missed but never forgotten.  My deepest condolences to her family.

My condolences to the Dela Cruz family. Ever since I was little I always called her auntie Lygia because she felt for like an aunt to me than just my mom's friend. She was such a warm hearted person to be around no matter what. She always was so interested in my school and how I was doing. She had a great sense of humor and was good at listening and understanding. I know she is in heaven watching down on everyone smiling and still comforting all of us.

Lygia was a very special person she had a warm heart of gold,a cheery disposition always had a smile or even laughter in her day. She is a friend that I will always look to for encouragement and keep her close to my heart and in my mind. Until we meet again in heaven my friend.  My prayers to Dela cruz family.

I met Lygia in Repro at Mesa College.  She always had a smile for me and all  the instructors she helped out with our class materials. We have all missed her since she retired and I am sad to hear of her passing. Such a sweet person will be missed by her family and friends. We know, however, that she rests in the Lord and her spirit is light and free.      Mary Ross

This is a deep loss for Mesa College.  I have known Lygia since 1998 as she cheerfully assisted me in my repro needs for my classes.  She will be missed by so many of us.  My condolences to her family members.

Miss Lygia will be remembered by me as a kind, fun spirit, always willing to help, and ready with a smile.  I am so very sorry to learn that she has left.  I had the distinct pleasure of working with her at Mesa for 25 years.  She had asked me about Turkish Delight after watching the Alice in Wonderland film.  My brother brought her a couple of bars and she was just thrilled.  What a joyous lady.

I am very sad to hear about the passing of Lygia. In my 13 years at San Diego Mesa College, I always enjoyed my encounters with her at the Reprographics Center. She was friendly, nice and an excellent problem solver. I remember how helpful she was to me when I first started teaching, and I was trying to figure out the system. I will miss seeing her.
